Reena (aged 11), Davenport

My name is Reena and I’m 12 years old. I look after my mum because she has epilepsy and she can often be feeling really sad too. If mum’s had a fit or not feeling well, I also look after my little sister. This includes keeping her calm when I have to call an ambulance, which I do quite a lot, as well as keeping my mum safe. Thinking about my family and how I can take care of them makes it hard to concentrate in school – my friends there don’t understand all the things I’m thinking about and I’m on my own there really.

Since joining Signpost Young Carers, I’ve made lots of new friends who know where I’m coming from. I’ve been able to do some really cool activities that I wouldn’t normally be able to do because of looking after mum. Young Carers have also arranged for me to have some extra support in school and now my school work is doing a lot better too!
